Vällyjä :: Sheepskin rugs in Aland

The trip to Aland and the sheepskin rug making course were a great success. The weather was as fine as it can be, the course well-organised, and the company (of sheep breeders) most inspiring. I'm not going to tell here how to actually make and print the rugs. For that, you can buy Britt Solheim's book (in Norwegian only) or take part in one of her courses in Norway. Britt Solheim (above, in black) and Maija the organiser (on the left) and the other participants examining a rug made by Britt.

My own rug, featuring all the five elements required for the traditional Norwegian sheepskin rug: sun, water, plants, animals (the bird symbolises myself, born on the year of the rooster according to the Chinese horoscope; then the horse, Girl's favourite animal; and finally the horned animal symbolising Sitting Bull, a capricorn in zodiac), as well as the "fifth element" which in this case is the heart. The fifth element is something that may symbolise love, protection, safety, fecondity, or the like, for example the labyrinth, Celtic knot, heart, etc. We used the Panduro Palett textile paints.

Britt had brought along a lot of wooden print blocks. These are mostly for borders. Some were hand-carved, some made by a company called Fjellform (select Nettbutikk -> Trykklosser for patterns and prices).

And more blocks.

Ei ihme, että Tuula pysähtyi välillä miettimään.
Tuula is wondering what to do next.

Norjalaiset taljat olivat todella kauniita. Perinteisesti vällyyn tarkoitettua lammasta ei keritä lainkaan, jolloin karva ehtii kasvaa todella pitkäksi. Tämä hunajanvärinen yksilö on rodultaan gammelnorsk farget spaelsau.

The Norwegian sheepskins were awesome. The sheep used for rugs are traditionally not shorn, and the wool is really long. The breed of this honey-coloured sheep is Spaelsau.

Alla olevan postauksen ohjeet ovat yksityiskohtaisia, kiitos niistä!

Kiinnostavaa! Tämä oli minullekin aivan uusi käsityöalue. Nuo puiset painoblokit ovat aina kiehtoneet mieltä, olen ostanut ulkomailta joskus kaiverrettuja seetripuisia puupaloja ja katsellut vähän sillä silmällä, että voisin kokeilla niiden tekoa. Siis koivupuuta voisi käyttää öljykäsittelyllä. Kiitos!
