Lomalla eli Ahkeruus on ilomme

Juhannusviikosta tuli todella tuottoisa käsitöiden määrällä mitaten. Käsityön museoon tehdyn sinänsä aika pienen, mutta aikaa vieneen neulegraffitiprojektin jälkeen minulle jäi päälle jokin kumma neulomisvimma. Niinpä tein Mikkelissä ensin yhden Swallowtail-huivin. Lanka on ohuempaa Wolli-villapellavaa.

Ruotsalaisen taidekäsityön näyttely yläkerrassa on ehdottomasti näkemisen arvoinen.

Started my summer holiday last week and been terribly busy. First, we had to finish the knitted graffiti for the Craft Museum of Finland. When we had sewn all the seams, tried it on the pillar in the exhibition hall and found it to fit perfectly, I decided to call it a day and head for eastern Finland and the lakeside. Other members of our group sewed on the buttons and hung it up on Tuesday. If you have a chance to go to Jyväskylä this summer, do go and see our graffiti in the basement of the museum. The Swedish crafts exhibition on the upper floors is worth a visit, too (or especially, someone else might say :D).

All that knitting, crocheting and tinkering for the graffiti that has been going on for a few weeks now has certainly influenced me more than I would have thought. For I couldn't stop knitting. First I made a Swallowtail scarf out of Raijan Aitta's Wolli yarn, which is a mix of linen and wool.

Teen varmasti toisenkin. Ehkä tästä itsevärjätystä, kertaamattomasta villalangasta. Vyyhdit ovat hieman eriväriset, joten täytynee neuloa huivi vuorokerroksin yhtä aikaa kummastakin langasta.

I loved knitting the Swallowtail. The pattern is easy and fast to knit and the finished scarf is simply lovely. I'll definitely make another one, perhaps of this hand-dyed wool yarn. The Wolli yarn is a bit scratchy on the neck, but I am now testing it for socks. The linen mixed into the wool should make the yarn more durable. We'll see when the socks will be taken to use.

Then I knitted a pair of socks of Trekking Pro Natura yarn- on 2.5 mm dpns which is my absolutely limit when it comes to fine needles. The yarn is 25% bamboo, 75% wool, and 100% bogus! I didn't like it at all. The yarn has no elasticity (wrong kind of wool perhaps?) and feels hard and uncomfortable (superwash treatment?). There's a lot of yarn left. Perhaps I'll used it for striped socks, alternating rows knitted with Trekking and my normal handspun wool yarn.

Pellavan sävyvalikoima on siellä kyllä pökerryttävä.

I visited a nice country shop called Raijan Aitta in Majavesi, close to Mikkeli. Raija, the owner, specialises in things made of linen. I bought a small bag of hand-dyed flax and tow fibres to mix with wool, most probably, to make artsy yarns. There are really a lot of shades of linen to chose from in the shop, maybe a bit too much!

This time, I did not take my spinning wheel with me when going on a holiday. Still, I managed to teach spinning to someone who was very eager to learn. She had a traditional Finnish spinning wheel which worked well. I tried spinning some collie hair, and found it very nice indeed. Now I must stop my neighbour the next time I see him with his dog and ask for some spinning fibres.

I have a million craft ideas in my mind right now, some projects need finishing and some have not been started yet. Since it is difficult to decide where to start, I think I'll just spend the day reading other people's blogs instead. Six more weeks of holidays to go, so no hurry.

WWKIP Day

Fil de BabacoolTänään vietettiin julkineulomispäivää Jyväskylässä.
Neulottiin.
Puhuttiin. Paljon.
Kuunneltiin puolella korvalla poliitikkojen palopuheita, kun satuttiin istumaan Speaker's Cornerin vieressä.
Miespoliitikot tulivat juttelemaan, naiskansanedustaja ei.
Ei ole vaalivuosi.
Miespoliitikko mainitsi meidät jopa puheenvuorossaan. Kiittävään sävyyn.
Miespoliitikko esittää Elvistä latinaksi. Hän esiintyy elokuussa Jyväskylässä pidettävässä latinankielisessä seminaarissa.
Seminaarin mielenkiintoisin luennon nimi näyttäisi olevan: Selkä paskana ja sama latinaksi.
Pieni off topic.
Toinen miespoliitikko tarjosi meille ilmaiset kahvit ja jäätelöt.

Jee, näillä saa ilmaiset kahvit! Ja jätskiä!Ihmeteltiin polttariporukoita.

The weather was ideal for the World Wide KIP day in Jyväskylä. We sat in a parc, near the Speaker's Corner were the local politicians and one member of parliament gave some short speeches. We noticed a man, skiing on the street, dressed in a pink dress. And we did get noticed, even in one of the speeches. And we were given free coffee and icecream tickets by the organisers of the Speaker's Corner. One of the speakers, by the way, was Dr. Ammondt, or the Latin Elvis, as he is also called. There will be a Latinists' conference in Jyväskylä in August, and he will be performing there. The lectures have interesting names like My back is shit and the same in Latin.

But I'm diverging here. What we did today was to knit a project that we have kept secret so far: a knitted graffiti for the Finnish Crafts Museum. The museum contacted me in April, asking me if our knitting group would be interested in making a graffiti for their permanent exhibition. Of course we were. And now the project is almost finished. I'll let you know when it will be on display in the museum. From the start, we decided to let all the flowers bloom in the graffiti and gave free hands to everyone to explore and realise their artistic potential. I have used a lot of my handspun yarns for the project. I've also used yarns that I've got as an exchange, like the handspun yarn in the first picture that I used to crochet the letters with and that I got from Babacool, France.

Ristiin rastiin :: Criss cross crochet

Jotakin viehättävää siinä kuitenkin on. Mutta liian hempeä ovikoristeeksi. Ei muuta kuin uutta ideaa odottelemaan...

This is green ... something. Originally, it was supposed to become some kind of a door decoration (to replace the Xmas wreath that is still hanging there, ehem) but it turned out a bit too fine and delicate to be placed outside. The background is handspun white and natural-coloured linen over which I crocheted bits of various wool yarns I have spun over the years. It is freeform crochet, in a way, I couldn't really give you a pattern of this. Somehow I like it, however. I just just have to wait for the idea for what to use this for ... and for a new door decoration as well.
